While working on the third episode, the musicians abandoned spontaneous improvisation and instead used prepared drums and bass lines, which made it possible to create more conscious music in a uniformed «african» style. The combination of a rich melodic component, non-standard time signatures and vocal polyphony created a pleasant hypnotic effect.

Viktor Tikhonov > One day I was sitting at home checking out a library of samples and field recordings that Misha had sent me while working on Detieti's fourth album. There were interesting things there. Misha with guys found a destroyed concrete building in the forest and for a long time played various intricate rhythms, hitting steel bars sticking out here and there. The ideas there were cool and I immediately cut out some loops, and later, got inspired, wrote down a dozen rhythmic patterns in an editor. At the same time, Nick and I were thinking about recording the third episode of our collab DEEBBBB - Detieti & IWKC. We’ve already had experience with spontaneous improvisation and did not want to repeat this, hoping only for a successful entry into the unconscious flow. I thought it would be cool to do something more meaningful. I sent Nick these ideas for drums so that he could compose bass lines. It seemed to me that this time we would try to make conditional “African” music. Conditional, because in those days, what was playing in my head and from my speakers was mostly classic dub and John Lurie's solo albums for inspiration. The African savannah found its way onto the cover, which I drew much later. At least, the attitude was obvious: we’ll keep the sunny dance feeling within. Set of instruments: two drum kits (minimal set: hi-hat/snare/kick), two more people playing percussion, two basses, two synthesizers, one guitar and two vocalists. This time the lineup was supplemented by our friends from Rudolf. Before the recording, we held one rehearsal, where we tested the prepared sketches with a small group and saw how it worked. We deliberately did not gather the full setup of 11 people, so that for some participants of the jam the confident interaction of the “ideological initiators” would remain a surprise and they would be able to spontaneously react to what they heard. The most joyful thing is that the guys prepared perfectly. Dima from Rudolf studied theory, selecting harmonic moves, basses of Nick and Misha complemented each other perfectly in different registers, Petr and Andrey merged so much in synth roll calls that during mixing it was not always clear who was sounding where. Alex from IWKC outdid everyone and made an entire African choir, periodically changing in style to reggae, and then almost entering the territory of Soviet bands. In real time, a loop station helped create polyphonies, and Roman was also at the microphone, added his signature humorous ragga/jungle/Barry White cocktail. I think the important advantage of this recording is the melodic component, which, coupled with non-standard rhythm patterns and a good dose of fooling around, gave an interesting result. The album was recorded at the very end of November 2020 and served as good therapy for us during that hectic time. We hope that you too will experience a pleasant hypnotic effect when listening to it.

Russian t.me/lezhbishe review:

Cheke Pow."
